AiO and Bullet R1 Comparison

No, the AiO is not a 2kg version of the Bullet 🙂

We Built AiO for Businesses

The AiO is a professional, industrial-strength roaster capable of roasting large volumes of coffee, effortlessly. It was designed with busy cafes in mind, but we also see this technology merging seamlessly with the blossoming micro-roastery movement.

The Bullet, on the other hand, is a very powerful home and/or sample roaster. It can be used to start a business, and hundreds of Bullet users around the world have done exactly that. But using the Bullet to supply a busy cafe or micro-roastery with sufficient coffee may require multiple machines, and a lot of time spent roasting.

Automation to Save Time and Labor

Traditionally, the only way to solve the time and effort problem would be with a much larger roaster. AiO instead solves the problem with automation. Charging the beans, roasting them according to your specifications, moving them to the cooling box, and then dispensing them after cooldown — the AiO does everything without the need for user input or even an external computer, freeing staff to do other things with their time while the AiO roasts.

Although the Bullet can replay roasts or follow roast recipes by automating preheat temperature, power, fan, and drum speed adjustments during a roast, it nonetheless requires an operator to be present while roasting (for safety reasons). That operator will also need to manually pour the beans into the drum when the preheat temperature is reached, drop them in the cooling tray when the roast is complete, and then stir the beans to help cool them. It is not a roaster you can walk away from to do other things while it is roasting.

Modular Design for Easy Future Upgrades

The AiO is a modular roasting platform designed with future upgrades in mind. Whether mechanical parts or electronics/sensors, many of these components can be swapped in by a person with no technical background, allowing for easy customizations and ultimately, an ever-improving user experience.

Iterative improvement is one of our core values, so the Bullet has also seen its share of important updates and upgrades over the years. But there are a number of limits baked into the Bullet’s design that prevent us from doing many things we would like to do. By choosing to go all-in on modularity with the AiO from the start, we will be able to do much, much more in the future.

Built-in Redundancy for Better Uptime

The Bullet has been on the market for many years now. Based on our statistics, we have identified which parts are most likely to fail and built redundancies for them in the AiO. This means that if they fail, the machine can continue roasting.

As an example: For cooling the electronic components, we have designed a push – pull airflow system, where up to two fans are allowed to fail without shutting down the AiO. Performance is unaffected, and the only penalty is more noise from the remaining fans having to run faster.

Advanced Electronics Monitoring and Fault-Reporting System for Faster Support

The Bullet has a built-in electronics monitoring system that continuously tracks its performance. The system helps to diagnose and solve technical problems more quickly.

The AiO takes this concept to a completely new level by leveraging an approach borrowed from the automotive industry.

Let us explain: On the Bullet, a single symptom can share multiple causes that must be ruled out in turn. On the AiO, each bus system or wire to a motor or sensor is isolated and protected against most other faults, such as a short circuit to ground or the bus voltage. A short circuit in one wire will only shut down the affected part and not the whole roaster. Similarly, an open connection can be detected.

Thanks to built-in redundancy, if a fault does occur, in most cases the AiO will continue operations. A smart self-check can then diagnose and locate the precise problem to be reported to us. In other words, in most cases the AiO will detect a fault, diagnose it, and send in a support ticket before you’re even aware there is a problem at all.

Our experience with the Bullet has taught us that it often takes more time to troubleshoot problems than it does to fix them. Being able to do this remotely on the AiO, on a very granular level, saves this time.

Many More Measurements, Even Finer Control

Bullet owners are fans of its data-driven approach to roasting, enabled by advanced measurement technology, as well as fine tuned controls.

The AiO is, again, on another level. For example:

  • IBTS (Infrared Bean Temperature Sensor) measurements in the AiO are far more robust, with over 100 zones being measured simultaneously. This means that while roasting, the AiO can tell you the temperature of the beans, the drum, and the drum vanes all at once. The Bullet can only measure one point at a time, and must be programmed to switch between drum and bean temp measurements.
  • Power and Fan settings are even more precise on the AiO, allowing users to dial in a specific % of the maximum allowed. The Bullet generally allows users to select a setting between 1 and 9.
  • Once dialed in, total power delivery in the AiO is up to 6x more precise, with the Bullet’s variations clocking in at +-3% and the AiO at +-.5%.
  • AiO offers air-heating, which can allow users to correct for ambient temperature variations that may impact roast accuracy. The Bullet does not have this feature.
  • AiO includes an onboard barometer and altimeter, to be used to further account for variables that may impact roast consistency.
